CIUDADANA ESTADOUNIDENSE VINCULADA A LA TRANSNACIONAL MINERA ASCENDANT COOPER CORPORATION, INFILTRADA EN UNA MANIFESTACION, PRESENTA FALSAS ACUSACIONES EN CONTRA DE LIDER DE INTAG
Dentro de la campania de persecucion, amedrentamiento y agresiones, iniciada desde el aסnio 2004 por la empresa minera canadiense Ascendant Cooper Corporation S.A. contra lideres y pobladores, opuestos desde 1995 a la actividad minera en la zona de Intag, la ciudadana estadounidense Leslie Brooke Chaplin, basada en acusaciones falsas, presento una accion judicial; esta vez, en contra de Carlos Zorrilla, habitante de Intag e integrante de la organizacion ambientalista DECOIN (Defensa y Conservacion de Intag).
Leslie Brooke Chaplin, quien se infiltrara en la manifestacion intenia en contra de la minera, realizada el dia 13 de julio de 2006 en la parte baja del Ministerio de Energia y Minas, e irresponsablemente provocara a los manifestantes repartiendo hojas volantes a favor de la mineria, presento el dia 23 de agosto de 2006 (diez dias despues de este significativo evento poblacional), una acusacion en contra de Carlos Zorrilla, por supuesto robo y lesiones.
El interes por deslegitimar y causar danio a los dirigentes de la poblacion de Intag, se refleja no solo en la presentacion de esta nueva falsa denuncia, sino en el retorcido camino que tienen que seguir unas diligencias basadas en la calumnia y la mentira: designacion de un “abogado de oficio” para que teoricamente Carlos Zorrilla receptara las notificaciones de las que nunca se entero sino hasta el dia 17 de octubre de 2006, cuando a las 6:15 a.m., alrededor de 11 policias irrumpieron violentamente en su domicilio, a fin de extraer “supuestas pruebas”. En efecto, ante el asombro de la esposa de Carlos Zorrilla y de su hijo, que en ese momento se encontraban en la casa, uno de los policias exhibio un paquete diciendo que era marihuana. En otro momento y en el cuarto del joven, otro policia dijo haber encontrado un arma. Con todo lo cual se preve nuevas acusaciones en base a estos objetos “aparecidos repentinamente en la vivienda”.
Ademas, los policias allanaron sin orden judicial, la vivienda vecina de Roberto Castro.
La manifestacion del 13 de julio de 2004, fue pacifica de principio a fin, los manifestantes ni siquiera ocuparon la calle Juan Leon Mera, sino la plazoleta del mismo edificio del Ministerio de Energia y Minas. A lo sumo, cuando esta ciudadana, de forma inoportuna e irresponsable, se infiltro en la manifestacion tratando de distribuir hojas volantes a favor de la Ascendant, las y los manifestantes se limitaron a quitarle ese material, tal como lo presenciaron varias organizaciones de Derechos Humanos, efectivos policiales y alrededor de 300 personas intenias, presentes en el evento.
Indigna el hecho de que esta ciudadana Leslie Brooke Chaplin, a mas de haberse infiltrado irresponsablemente en la manifestacion intenia, ahora aparezca como la acusadora de un dirigente con una limpia trayectoria de dedicacion y entrega a las comunidades intenias. Reconocido por sus meritos e incesante servicio a la comunidad. Gestor de proyectos productivos alternativos como el cultivo y procesamiento del cafe organico, que se exporta a Europa, Asia y Estados Unidos; defensor de las reservas hidricas y de la riqueza natural de los bosques nublados de la zona de Intag, impulsador de proyectos que reportan ingresos a las mujeres campesinas.
Es aun mas censurable, el hecho de que nuestras instituciones judiciales y policiales se vean inmersas en estos retorcidos procesos en contra de pobladores intenios, constituyendose en piezas utiles de la empresa minera Ascendant Copper Corporation, cuyo unico interes, es el de extraer minerales de la zona de Intag y procurar ganancias a como de lugar, aun a costa de la vida, libertad, bienestar y mas derechos fundamentales de la poblacion intenia y sus dirigentes.
Este juicio, al que esta vez, la Ascendant lo disfraza como de “robo y lesiones”, es en el fondo una arremetida mas en contra de la causa colectiva por la defensa de Intag.

US CITIZEN LINKED TO A TRANSNATIONAL MINING COMPANY, ASCENDANT COOPER CORPORATION, INFILTRATED A DEMONSTRATION AND BROUGHT FALSE ACCUSATIONS AGAINST INTAG LEADER
As part of the campaign of persecution, intimidation and aggression waged since 2004 by the Canadian Ascendant Copper Corporation S.A. mining company against leaders and residents opposing mining activity in the Intag zone since 1995, US citizen Leslie Brooke Chaplin has brought suit based on false accusations, this time against Carlos Zorrilla, an Intag resident belonging to DECOIN (Defense and Conservation of Intag), an environmental organization.
Leslie Brooke Chaplin, who infiltrated an Intag demonstration against the mining company on July 13, 2006 at the entrance to the Ministry of Energy and Mining, irresponsibly provoked demonstrators by passing out flyers in the mining company’s favor. She brought suit on August 23, 2006, ten days after this significant event for local residents, accusing Carlos Zorrilla of alleged theft and injury.
The interest in tarnishing the reputation and harming leaders of the Intag people is reflected not only in this new unfounded complaint, but also in the crooked way that the mining company has proceeded on the basis of slander and lies, appointing a “proxy” so that theoretically Carlos Zorrilla was served notice. Zorrilla had no idea of this plot until October 17, 2006, at 6:15 a.m., when about 11 policemen broke violently into his home in order to supposedly remove “evidence”. In fact, in front of Carlos Zorrilla’s amazed wife and son, one of the policemen displayed a package claiming it was marihuana. Then, another policeman claimed he found a weapon in the boy’s bedroom. This makes it foreseeable that there may be new accusations on the basis of these objects that suddenly turned up in their home. The 11 policemen also broke and entered a neighboring family’s home without any court warrant.
The July 13, 2004 demonstration was peaceful from beginning to end. Demonstrators never even occupied Juan León Mera Street, but rather the front courtyard of the Ministry of Energy and Mining. When this US citizen infiltrated the demonstration in such an untimely, irresponsible manner, attempting to hand out flyers in Ascendant’s favor, demonstrators did nothing but take away that material, as witnessed by several Human Rights organizations, police officers and over 300 people from Intag present at the event.
It is outrageous for this US citizen, Leslie Brooke Chaplin, in addition to having recklessly infiltrated the Intag demonstration, to now appear as the plaintiff accusing a leader with a spotless background of dedication to serving the communities of the Intag area. Carlos Zorrilla is widely recognized for his merits and unceasing community service. He has organized alternative production projects such as growing and processing organic coffee that is exported to Europe, Asia and the United States; he has defended water resource reserves and the natural bounties of the cloud forests of the Intag zone, promoting projects that provide income for villager women.
However it is far more outrageous for our judicial and police institutions to be involved in such crooked moves against Intag residents, as eager pawns for the Ascendant Copper Corporation mining company, whose sole interest is to extract ore from the Intag zone, and make hefty profits any way they can, even if at the cost of the life, liberty, well-being and other fundamental rights of the Intag population and its leaders.
This lawsuit, disguised by Ascendant as “theft and injury” is actually just another attack against the collective cause of defending the villages of Intag.
